Assists with patient care activities under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
Functions as a member of the surgical team fulfilling the scrub role.
Anticipates, plans and organizes supply and equipment needs for each assigned surgical procedure in a timely manner.
Utilizes physician preference cards to assemble needed equipment and supplies.
Prepares and sets up the sterile field.
Participates in the surgical procedure by anticipating needs, passing instruments, suture, sponges, supplies etc.
Follows departmental procedure for all sponge, sharp and instrument counts.
Performs end of procedure tasks and environmental sanitation according to established policy and procedure.
Returns unused supplies and equipment to proper storage areas.
Anticipates usual and unexpected events during the surgical procedure and responds in an efficient manner.
Adheres to aseptic practices providing and maintaining a safe environment.
Continuously observes for contamination/breaks in aseptic technique.
Takes appropriate measures to correct any breaks in aseptic technique.
Follows departmental procedures when scrubbing and donning sterile gown and gloves.
Follows departmental procedures observing recommended practices for aseptic technique.
Handles and processes surgical specimens according to established policy/procedure.
Experience
Previous OR experience preferred.
CST preferred.
Other relevant medical/surgical experiences will be considered
Education
High school diploma or its equivalent.
Completion of a Surgical Technician program with eligibility for certification or Licensed Practical Nurse with current OR scrub experience.
Consideration will also be given to relevant medical training and operating room experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Knowledge of surgical instrumentation and their associated care.
Knowledge of surgical supplies and equipment.
Knowledge of medical and surgical asepsis and infection control principles.
Verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
Manual dexterity skills.
Good interpersonal relationship skills.
Ability to work under stressful and changing conditions in a calm, productive and flexible manner.
